Research Translation Specialist - Embedded System
Position Summary
Reporting to the manager of research translation, the Research Translation Engineer/Specialist will provide expert consultancy and engineering services to the Research Centers, and be able to deploy their skills broadly across a number of projects focused on research translation. The job holder will work with a team of engineers, researchers, designers, and stakeholders to drive the innovation, development, testing and deployment of innovative technologies at KAUST. The role will involve collaborative projects across different research groups within KAUST and other premier academic and industrial partner institutions that focus on impactful research and science-driven technology development.

Major Responsibilities
  • Manage and execute research and development efforts related to embedded systems and contribute to software (C/C++, JavaScript, and Python) development across common low-power microprocessor families (PIC, ARM, AVR, etc.)
  • Program FPGAs or microcontrollers to collect/organize data from various ICs/sensors via any manner of serial/parallel communication protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, USB, 8b10b) and disseminate that data in a multitude of ways (e.g., serial outputs such as USB, UART, NRZL, biphase)
  • Collaborate with researchers on the implementation of real-time signal processing and control algorithms using various sensors, actuators and inputs from other components
  • Translate stakeholder input (e.g. from partners, technical team, end users, and industry representatives) into high level and low level system requirements
  • Experience in estimating and prioritizing features based on engineering complexity and customer impact.
  • Review and maintain electrical hardware design (understand schematics, probe signals, and debug embedded systems) as part of ongoing system development, support, and optimization efforts
  • Participate in custom circuit design and PCB layouts in collaboration with other project team members and interface with outside vendors to fabricate necessary components
  • Leverage electrical safety compliance, testing, and quality standards to ensure prototyped devices incorporate safely and reliably
Qualifications Required Education and Experience
  • Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science with 8 years of industry experience or a PhD with 4 years industry experience
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in concept prototyping and product development
Required Qualifications
  • Experience in real-time operating systems and embedded systems with challenging application requirements
  • Working experience with operating system programming (Embedded Linux and real-time operating systems)
  • Knowledge and experience selecting and programming microprocessors, controllers, and FPGAs
  • Practical experience in writing low-level drivers and interrupt service routines
  • Practical experience with wired microcontroller protocols (I2P, I2C, SPI, USB, UART)
  • Practical experience with wireless protocols (WiFi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, BT and BLE)
  • Practical experience with standard internet protocols such as TCP/IP
  • Practical experience with standard streaming protocols such as RTP and RTCP
  • Practical Experience with standard audio and video protocols and formats
  • Practical experience with secure boot, secure protocols, and encryption
  • Knowledge of power and memory optimization techniques in embedded and battery powered devices
  • Familiarity with electrical safety compliance and testing
  • Proficiency in computer programming and electromechanical design/simulation software (e.g. C/C++, Python, Altium, PSpice, AutoCad Electrical, Matlab)
  • Experience with computer-based instrumentation and data acquisition
  • Knowledge of software development in Linux environments is a plus
  • Knowledge and experience working with manufacturing sources and component vendors is a plus
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of phase appropriate product development milestones and end user-centric focus that can facilitate translational research in accordance with technical and commercialization goals
