The Opportunity
Data Scientists often find themselves saddled with the digital exhaust organization's transactional systems generate without regard to the information (or lack thereof) it possesses. At 1848 Ventures, we uniquely embed data science into our concept development process, beginning pre-data through commercialization. This approach enables us to define the information-rich digital representations of the phenomena and entities of interest to develop unique and robust solutions.
1848 Ventures is structured to pursue many concurrent innovation efforts, developing digital products that serve small businesses at any given time. Each of these efforts may be at a different stage in its evolution, something we call the 'innovation funnel.' We work to refine and build confidence in the proposed solution's desirability, feasibility, and viability through these stages. For the data science team, this evolution manifests itself as increasing fidelity in collaborating on pain point understanding, solution ideation, digital representation design, data acquisition, prototype development, and exploring the value of data as a component of total net value generated by the solution.
What You Will Do:
- Collaborate with the concept development team to discover and understand pain points small businesses face
- Ideate potential model-driven solutions
- Identify the digital signals required to bring the solution to life
- Design and execute a strategy to acquire the data (purchase, partner, generate, collect)
- Design solution prototype in partnership with the small businesses it targets
- Collaborate with data scientists and developers to develop and iterate prototype
- Assess and design mitigation strategies for the risks and consequences associated with the model-driven solution
- Help determine real-world value and utility of the potential solutions
- Help set and refine our broader data strategy, including the ways we work and tools, to name a few
How You Will Get Here:
- Applied data science (or similar) experience with a desire to leverage this experience as a thought leader in developing concepts from the ground up
- An entrepreneurial spirit
- The ability to dive deep and solve new complex problems but the discernment to know when and how deep to dive (progress over perfection; value-driven)
- Exposure to or an appreciation of human-centered design and innovation philosophy
- Commercial experience applying data and machine learning to drive innovation and generate business value
- Knowledgeable about various data analysis and machine learning approaches, what to consider when using them, and most importantly when to apply them
- Prior experience working with data engineers, software engineers, and dev ops teams to set up appropriate technical resources to perform Data Science work
