Intermediate Designer (eCommerce)

Fluorescent Design Inc

Fluorescent Design Inc. is hiring an Intermediate Product Designer (eCommerce).

About

Fluorescent is a fully-remote eCommerce software design and development company located in second bedrooms and home offices across Canada. As official Shopify partners, we actively develop and maintain a small catalogue of premium Shopify templates (called 'themes').
Our team is small, but growing. We value autonomy, collaboration, and empathy for the customer. Being a remote team means that we work asynchronously on most of our projects. We believe in empowerment over management, and trust that each member is self-sufficient in delivering their work while asking for direction or support when necessary.
We're looking for a Designer who values user experience, attention-to-detail and just enough research. Through our enduring interest in how people use our products, Fluorescent embraces a model of software design and development that is iterative and gradual. Like high-performance engines or grandma's cooking, our products are built through a process of continuous refinement (usually on two week release cycles). We're looking for someone who is comfortable embodying this approach.
We offer a competitive salary, four weeks vacation, fully remote work, and an opportunity to get in on the ground floor. Getting in on the ground floor means that you're going to have an impact on the way the company works. It also means that there won't be guidelines and that processes will occasionally be vague and ambiguous. If you're someone who needs a straightforward process to follow, this role might not be for you.
A number of our team members have opted to work a four-day work week. If you'd like a four-day work week and you're the right candidate, we're happy to discuss it. Quality of life is very important to us.
The salary band for the full-time position is $80,000 - $100,000/year.

About the Role

As a Designer with Fluorescent, you'll be working on improving, refining and expanding our collection of premium Shopify themes. Our catalogue is small, so you'll have time to get to know each of our products well, to take ownership, and to have a lasting impact. Each theme is a unique design system and you'll be responsible for maintaining and adapting those systems over time. Shopify Merchants are a diverse bunch, so you'll also be spearheading user experience research at the company, translating your insights into new products and features.
In the first three months, you'll:
  • Onboard to our existing design systems, release cycle and product roadmap
  • Design new features that are accessible and highly usable using existing design systems
  • Familiarize yourself with our merchants' needs and our processes for gathering user experience insights
  • Actively contribute to product planning sessions with the team
In the first 12 months, you'll:
  • Deliver major features, theme and app projects from start to finish
  • Take ownership of our design systems and Figma documents
  • Take ownership of our processes for gathering insight into our customers' experiences and needs
  • Contribute to our standards of design by educating your team
  • Art direct marketing and outreach efforts
  • Collaborate with your team on project planning
  • Experiment with creative solutions and new technologies to create exceptional themes

Relevant Skills & Technical Knowledge

In order to perform in this role you'll need:
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates experience designing software for a variety of contexts and for both desktop and mobile devices.
  • Hands-on experience building scalable and durable design systems.
  • Basic familiarity with HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • The ability to inspect built designs in your browser using developer tools.
  • An ability to speak to your decisions, embrace feedback and collaborate with a team.
We'd also love to see:
  • Experience with Shopify or designing for some other eCommerce platform.
  • Experience prototyping and animating your own interfaces.
  • Experience rigging animations in CSS and Javascript.
  • Basic familiarity with GitHub and version control.

About you

You are someone who cares about doing great work and wants to improve your craft over time. For us, this doesn't mean spending every spare minute hacking on side projects, but means that you bring a desire to learn and improve your skills as a designer.
You understand that design is about more than just how something looks (though that's important too!). You're curious about the ways in which your users use your designs and think deeply about how to improve your work by researching and understanding user behaviour.
You think about design systematically without getting too bogged down in pixel budging. You're methodical and like to think about how to make designs more modular and scalable so that your team can work faster.
You are able to manage your own time and prioritize the work that needs to be done. We're here to support you, but being a part of a remote team means that we trust you to take ownership of your work and see your projects through to completion.
You recognize the importance of engineering and enjoy working with engineers to make products look, feel and work better. You enjoy refining the details because you understand that they add up to something greater.
You have a minimum of three years experience working as a professional designer and are looking for a culture of continuous improvement.

Diversity and Inclusion

At Fluorescent, we believe that a diverse, inclusive company is a strong company. We encourage Indigenous people, women, people of colour, people with disabilities, members of LGBTQ+ community, and other under-represented groups to apply.
If you don't meet all of our requirements exactly or have taken a non-traditional professional path we still want to hear from you! Use your cover letter to tell us about your unique experience - we understand that talent comes from many places and that skills are transferable.

How to Apply

Send a cover letter, work samples and resume. A fully curated portfolio isn't necessary to apply. In fact, we've found it can often obscure context. We're designers too and there's no need to hide anything. Feel free to share a list of links to Figma documents (even if those documents show process and iteration). Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
