The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet's most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.
Include something about the program, department or project the position is part of.
The Henry Kendall Gift Officer is part of UCS's Membership Team, a team of five staff who together are responsible for acquiring and retaining the donors who support our work. The Henry Kendall Society is UCS's mid-level giving society, consisting of members who make gifts of between $1,000 and $25,000 a year. Kendall Society members are stewarded and cultivated by a team of two gift officers.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
  • Growing the number and size of gifts from donors at the Henry Kendall level
  • Serving as the principal point of contact for a dedicated portfolio of Henry Kendall Society members
  • Partnering with the Membership Director to develop and execute donor acquisition and retention related programs. Develop and co-author annual workplans.
Serve as a thought partner for the Associate Gift Officer/HKS and other UCS staff who are interested in developing their skills in society-level and individual-level fundraising.
Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
  • Five years of fundraising experience, including experience with direct donor contact and in-person solicitation, as well as knowledge of donor tracking systems.
  • A goal and results orientation is required, as is an interest and desire to excel in frontline fundraising.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, and a desire to initiate and engage in conversations with donors regarding their giving priorities and UCS activities.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, including the ability to anticipate tasks, manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and function smoothly under strict deadlines and shifting priorities—with a thorough attention to detail and follow-through
  • The ability to learn about and work with a complex donor database, and learn, retain, and utilize complex data entry routines and rules.
UCS is an equal opportunity employer actively seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we're dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We're also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities.
